A series of fortunate events

The funny thing is, I never even finished posting my photos from my trip to Laos last May, and here I am again.

Ka-Pow!

In Laos. A one-year resident. My life is weird.

Never did I think I would come back. I enjoyed it, added it to my list of countries I’d visited, now time to move on to the next place calling me – Morocco, Ethiopia, New Zealand.

But a simple prayer last summer started a series of events that still leave me in awe.

“Lord, please let me be open to what you have next for me.”

That was terrifying for me to pray. I like to know what to expect and to take care of myself. A prayer like that would send me spiraling out of my comfort zone… little did I know how much!

Pow!

A conversation with a colleague who worked out of my employer’s Asia office started the spiraling. Then I just sat back and watched it all happen. I did very little in the process. Door after door opened. Amazing event after amazing event happened in my life. I could see Jesus slowly walking me down this path of change.

Was I terrified? Absolutely. Did I know I had to do this? Yes.

I signed my contract to work in Asia about three weeks before I flew out. My new role would be digital engagement – web content, social media, capacity building. They could get a work visa for me in Laos.

The story is much longer than that- it might require a series of essays, but you have an idea how this all came about.

Leaving Seattle was even harder than I expected. I have incredible friends and family that I didn’t want to be away from, but I had to go find out why God wanted me here. To be honest, I’m still not sure why. I do know He made my path straight, so I’m going to do my best to give this adventure a go.

Wham!

I’m here! Two days in Bangkok, now almost a week in Vientiane. As my work paperwork is completed, I’ve bounced from my guest house to coffee shop to coffee shop. Each day is hot, in the 90’s, though I hear the “cool” season is coming.

Last night I finally ventured out to THE main place to see and be seen in Vientiane, the Mekong river walk. I’m not sure if the carnival is always there, or just for the upcoming boat racing festival which celebrates the end of the Buddhist lent, but music was booming and rides were spinning.

I’m off for a year of hopefully fortunate events.
